Jazbet

Summary

Among the more unusual characters to join the parade of The Incarnate Mother through Morrowind was contingency from House Dres, who had been hired by Queen Elysana to destabilize Helseth's reign. Among the more unusual of these was Jazbet, a former slave who had become a master of a domain in the most outwardly racist of Morrowind’s Houses.

Jazbet was a strong fighter, congenitally un-serious, and soon became Loranna’s lover. When Azura demanded that all bow down before her, Jazbet, thinking she was still Loranna, obeyed, and became an Azurite. Realizing instantly what he had done, he tore out his own eyes.

He brought the group to his domain, Ald Raathim, on the mainland of Morrowind as they fled the other Azurites. A natural precognitive, Jazbet found his latent talent increasing with his eyesight gone. Soon he was having visions of a coming apocalypse, and that evidence began the search for the Flamekiss gem in the Vaults of Gemin.

Before Loranna left on that quest, Jazbet gave her a ring and asked her to be his wife. That was unfortunately the last time they would see each other alive. The visions of the apocalypse were too much for his mind to handle: he passed into a coma, and died shortly thereafter.

His souless body was then inhabited by the bodiless soul of Dagoth Lich, so in a real sense, the form of Jazbet still lives, though in dress, clothing, and personality, the two are very unlike one another.

Since his death, more about his life has come to life. It has been revealed that he was the son of a Khajiit slave raped by the former master of Ald Raathim, Dres Raithmat. He later had an affair with Raithmat’s daughter, unbeknownst to either, his own half-sister Seresina, which brought about his son, Seres. Years later, he returned to Ald Raathim after Seresina had inherited it, and became her knight, and eventually the inheritor of the land.

Exactly how a Khajiiti ex-slave was able to charm the House Dres into letting him be the lord of one of their territories is something of a mystery. Certainly, Jazbet had natural charisma, and certainly, Ald Raathim was – at the time – such a minor territory that one hardly bothered about it. Still, there are several tales about how he managed this, including one where he rescued Dres Minsero from drowning, earning the gruff old man’s respect.

Jazbet was not a natural nobleman, but having a Khajiit and former slave as the Lord of Ald Raathim began its heritage as a place of freedom and diversity.
